4. Frequently Asked Questions
1. How does the battery work?
Batteries work like human heart. Like the human heart which supplies much needed oxygen, the car’s battery supply the initial burst of electricity to fire up the car’s ignition, lights, air conditioning, alternator etc. The list goes on.
2. What are the considerations when buying a battery?
a. Size matters- look for the dimension in length, breadth, height as well as terminal size.
b. Cold cranking amps (CCA)- usually more applicable to colder countries. This states the minimum power required to start in cold condition. The higher the CCA, the greater is the starting power of the battery.
c. Ampere Hour (AH)- amount of charge stored and able to deliver consistently for a particular period. Ensure that the new battery is of equivalent AH.
3. What affects the lifespan of a battery?
a. In our tropical climate, the heat dries up the water in the battery, which deteriorates the battery. Corrosion may also occur on the positive terminal affecting its discharging ability.
b. In city traffic, where a lot of stop and go occurs, batteries tend to be insufficiently charged after every crank. This could result in the battery gradually losing its initial AH.
c. With every crank, the battery usually need about 50-80km to be fully charged again.
4 When should I change my car battery and how long is my battery supposed to last?
a. There is no pre-determined battery life span. The battery life is actually affected by a combination of factors- temperature of operating condition, driving style and habit, condition of fan belt and alternator.
b. Some cars also tend to wear out the battery more than others.
c. Check your battery at the nearest workshop to be sure. Look out for the following readings- 12.65V is the terminal voltage of a fully charge battery. Any reading below 11.89V means that the battery is completely discharged, or has no power.
d. A flat battery does not mean the battery is damaged. Check the starter, alternator to be doubly sure.
e. If forced to make a prediction of average battery lifespan- a wet standard battery usually last 1 to 2 years, while a maintenance free battery usually last 2-4 years.
5. How do I jump start my car?
a. Pull up both cars to within jump cable length, without the cars touching.
b. Switch engine off
c. Attached positive clamp (Red) to dead battery positive terminal (Red) before attaching to positive terminal (Red) of live battery.
d. Attach negative clamp (Black) to live battery negative terminal (Black) and attached the other negative clamp to the engine block or metal surface of the car away from the battery.
e. Start engine of charging car
f. The dead battery should be good for crank in a minute or so
g. The dead battery may recharge following the jump start, but should you require charging again, please visit a workshop.
6. Maintenance free or wet standard battery?
Wet standard battery can be topped up with distilled water whilst maintenance free batteries do not require any top up. You can charge the non-maintenance free at higher currents as they are not "sealed" so any gas can escape.
7. What are the syndromes of a failing battery?
There are no specific signs to a failing battery. But the moment cranking gets “reluctant”, attention should be given. It may also be good to drop by a reliable workshop to get a “reading” of your battery.
8. What are the readings of a good/ bad battery?
An automotive battery is considered charged with a reading above 12.4v. Any reading below 12.39v means that the battery is being discharged.
